This hits. As a woman in construction, I almost always have to have my representative on when I'm in meetings with clients and vendors/subs. It is exhausting. I value the ones I can be myself with. Great article!

This entire body of work sis, made me look at myself at every paragraph. I am pretty much an expert at watching people on mute. But lately I’ve come to realize that I am not just watching and observing people, it's a conversation each time in my head. So is that performance or it’s just me trying to read people based on what has been presented in front of me?

I watched your two minutes video and I must say I did face the same thing early this year. An friend sent me a DM saying your publication is doing such amazing things; your designs, your issues, how come you don’t have a batch yet and how come you’re growing so slowly? You should be high up there right now because you’re doing such rare work?

My answer to her was straightforward; "I have made friends, I’ve met people, we’ve had calls, we've had chats, we've had email xchanges, I’ve built friendship that I don’t have physically and never would have imagined having physically. And if I become so big, would I be able to have this relationships and conversation I've come to have anymore? Would I treat people the same?

Above all, haven’t you noticed? I asked her, all these big accounts don’t respond to their writings. They don’t reply to them, their replies are mostly "thank you. I appreciate this" - zero realness or character-wise in it. They are literally all selling something and the most important thing to them is for you to click a button and see the clicking to the end.

I do enjoy having to watch and analyze from within, but I’m happy once in a while I come to the realization that there’s a human being within me and infront of me. I cannot trade the relationships I've built on Substack for becoming viral and not having the time to say "hello and hi to the people I’ve come to care about or reply to their messages because I’m now so big and that is below me" - which is something I can confidently say 90% of them show off.

Thanks sis for this miraculous reflection.
